If buying the mattress won’t put a major dent in your wallet, I’d go with that, but otherwise save your money and just buy the pad.
We recently purchased mattress toppers for our kids, whose mattresses were hard as a rock. Now they are soft and cozy.
I think if you buy the mattress, you’re wasting a lot of money since it is only the first inch or so that matters.
I absolutely love my mattress. I had the toppers before and found a floor model bed on sale for 50% off. Very nice. Have had it 8 years now and not one sag anywhere. If you put a topper on a saggy mattress, the mattress will still sag. These do not seem to sag. Ever. They are however, not cheap.
