has anyone ever used a memory foam mattress pad?

Yes. It is VERY “comfy”. However, unless you can drive right to the campsite, and there is NO back-backing of gear involved, the foam pads are not too practical because of their weight. In an extended camp-out environment, they can be a blessing. Last year, I spent almost three months in a tent and memory foam made it memorable instead of something I would rather forget. Be sure to keep it clean by making a slip cover to keep it in. It seems like no matter how hard we try, things do have a tendency to get dirty when we camp out. It’s easier to wash the cover than it is to clean the foam. Good luck!
